The shoestring-ness of Dr. Horrible, the desperation of Firefly, the network regulations on Buffy/Angel- that's when he did his best work. I'm worried he'll get distracted by things that time and budget allow and forget what it is he does best- good character-based storytelling.Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12248733134677641570noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-819574624315343295.post-19850736587934434212011-07-23T17:50:49.801-04:002011-07-23T17:50:49.801-04:00So I finally saw it.
Rachael is our resident HP ...So I finally saw it.

Rachael is our resident HP writer, and with good reason- she simply likes the movies a lot more than I do, whereas I get caught up with all the things that were crazy important to me in the books that I think they screwed up.

That said, I completely agree with her about Emma Watson. Unlike Rachael, I never really cared one way or another about Hermione, I always found Ron far more interesting and my favourites were always Draco and Neville. But Watson has done (specifically in films 6-7.2) what not a single other person in the film series did- make me like their character more. Not even my beloved Emma Thompson could be a better Trelawney than the one in my head, poor silly-faced Danile Radcliffe didn't stand a chance. But Watson, she did the incredible.

Also, nostalgia and general franchise love and the occasional tear (mostly when Hermione doesn't blink before offering to go with Harry to his death).

But, because I have to vent, on with my qualms:

- Wormtail. The incredible film that was 7.1 (the only one I truly loved) didn't featured Rowling's beautifully poetic death for Pettigrew. So I assumed they were going to make something of that in 7.2, but he never showed. So now HP universe exists in which Wormtail survives. Is that not strange?

- Percy. One of my absolute favourite things about the final book is the moment when the controversial Percy Weasley finally gets his head screwed on straight. And we skipped it. I get that they have to cut small stuff like that for time (I barely made a peep when they cut my favourite moment from part 1- the Dudley goodbye) but this movie was the shortest of the series, surely they could have thrown Percy a line (or at least given him his character-identifying glasses).

- The Kissing. Okay, I promise I won't complain about the absurd frequency of "middle of battle, lets stop and smooch" moments. But the main, unavoidable, must-go-there kiss lost its oomph when relocated to the chamber of secrets. Again, cutting subplots, I get it. But Ron kissing Hermione after she's brave enough to destroy the cup is not nearly as fantastically rewarding for HP fans as her kissing him when he worries about the house elves. The way it was, all I could think was "why didnt he do that earlier?"

And, most importantly,
-DRACO! Rachael already touched on the point-missing decision to imprison the Slytherins in the dungeon (seriously people?) but what really bothered me was the extrapolating on Draco's story. I like the occasional extrapolation (that dance scene that was added to 7.1 was wonderful) but not when it messes with Rowling's redemption stories. A major part of book 7 is seeing all the non-villain antagonists redeemed in some way, an idea that was certainly touched on when Ollivander admired the pliability of Malfoy's wand. But having Draco actually cross the yard to join the death eaters and walk off with his mother did a disservice to one of my favourite characters. There was a strange villification that happened that happened to the morally ambiguous characters that I found contradictory and really disappointing.

That's it, I promise I'll shut up now and let you enjoy the film for all its fond memories and era-closing importance. Though, seriously, they're going to start remaking these things within the decade, don't worry.Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12248733134677641570noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-819574624315343295.post-80710562813373165452011-05-26T21:28:17.770-04:002011-05-26T21:28:17.770-04:00This movie is abysmal.
